Under the able guidance and encouragement of Dr. (Mrs.) Charanjit Mahal, Director, GNGC, GNCH and GNIFD, and College Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Rakhi Malhotra, the Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak Girls College, organised a presentation and awareness programme on the occasion of World Senior Citizens Day on 21 August 2026. The programme was based on the theme “Ageing with Dignity: Understanding the Changing Status of Senior Citizens in Society.”
A slideshow was also presented highlighting the changing status of senior citizens, their role in the family and society, challenges faced by them, generation gap, loneliness and social isolation, digital divide, active ageing and the importance of dignity and inclusion in old age. The presentation focused on important sociological issues such as joint family and nuclear family systems, financial dependence and the role of youth in supporting the elderly. Students actively engaged with these issues and discussed ways to promote respect, care, dignity and inclusion of senior citizens in contemporary society.
The programme concluded with the message that ageing is not a decline in dignity but a stage of life deserving respect, care and inclusion, encouraging students to develop stronger intergenerational relationships and contribute towards a more compassionate and inclusive society.
