Celebrating International Literacy Day 2026 | Literacy for a Better Tomorrow
Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Ludhiana celebrated International Literacy Day on 8th September 2026 with great enthusiasm and a strong commitment towards promoting the transformative power of education and literacy.
To mark the occasion, the students were encouraged to reflect upon the importance of literacy and digital literacy in the modern world through an Essay Writing Competition, which witnessed an enthusiastic participation of more than 120 students. The activity provided the students with a meaningful platform to express their thoughts on how literacy empowers individuals, strengthens communities and enables people to participate effectively in an increasingly digital society.
The winners of the Essay Writing Competition were felicitated with certificates by Dr. (Mrs.) Charanjit Mahal, Director, Guru Nanak Girls College, Guru Nanak Charitable Hospital and Guru Nanak Institute of Fashion Designing, along with Dr. (Mrs.) Rakhi Malhotra, Principal, Guru Nanak Girls College. Their appreciation served as an encouragement for the students to continue developing their creativity, communication skills and intellectual abilities.
As an important part of the celebrations, the students were also taken to the college library, where they were encouraged to explore books, cultivate the habit of reading and exchange knowledge and ideas with one another. The visit emphasised that literacy goes beyond the ability to read and write—it is a lifelong process of learning, questioning, sharing and growing.
The day thus proved to be a fruitful and enriching experience, enabling students to hone their writing and communication skills, broaden their knowledge, develop a deeper appreciation for reading and recognise their responsibility towards society.
Let us read. Let us learn. Let us share. Let us empower.
Because every literate mind has the power to illuminate another.
